Eastwood's free gardening
service for elderly and disabled people
has scooped a national award. The
council service in Eastwood makes sure people
who cannot look after their own garden can
have their grass cut, hedges trimmed and paths
cleared. Eastwood won a £250 prize. It will now
go to a national final against 16 other local
councils, with the winner announced next month.
The first Community
Empowerment Awards were sponsored by the Commission
for Rural Communities in association with the
National Association for Local Councils (NALC).
Eastwood Mayor Coun Sue Bagshaw said
' Im absolutely delighted. Eastwood Town Council
is obviously very proud of the garden service
and I am sure people who benefit from it would
be delighted for us as well.'
The national winners,
who will receive a £750 prize, will be
announced at the NALC annual conference on
September 22. The regional winners will also
be available to provide advice and share their
experiences at a session highlighting their
achievements.
Jaki Bayly, head of
best practice at the Commission for Rural Communities,
said 'This is just the beginning of what we are
hoping to achieve. The winners of these awards
will assist in establishing education networks
across the country to enable best practice to
be shared throughout the first tier. This will
enable a casebook of real projects to be available
to benefit any council beginning a new scheme'.

We
now have a listing status for the
War Memorial on Nottingham Rd and therefore
are looking for any information regarding its
history.
Did you know any
of the fallen heroes that are listed
on the memorial?
Do you know who built
and designed the memorial in 1921?
Any information you
can give us would be greatly received.
